“Can I take this up?”

“Can I take this up?”

It sounds like a simple question.

But for a professional, it can carry much more weight than:
“Do I want this opportunity?”
Because sometimes the real questions are:
Do I have the capacity for this?
What will this require from me?
What do I need to learn?
Where can I genuinely create impact?
And can I do justice to what is being entrusted to me?

I found myself asking some of these questions recently.
I was invited to RAKUM School, an inclusive school, for a meeting with Mr. Stanly Ebenezer, an academician with nearly 30 years of experience.
As we discussed the possibilities of what Change Institutes International (CII) could contribute, my mind naturally went into assessment mode.

Not:
“What can we sell?”

But:
“What does the school actually need?”
What areas would need attention?
What would have to be designed differently?
How would the intervention need to accommodate an inclusive environment?
How much time would it require from us?
And most importantly — where could our involvement make a meaningful difference?

Because there is a difference between accepting a project and accepting the responsibility that comes with it.

The second requires you to pause.
To listen.
To understand the context.
To question your own assumptions.

And sometimes, to step into territory where your existing expertise needs to be adapted rather than simply applied.
That is what made this meeting meaningful for me.

Though, We are now working towards some planned interventions for the school — I still, carefully thought through rather than simply adding another programme to the calendar.
And perhaps that is one of the most important lessons in our professional journey:

Not every opportunity requires an immediate YES.
Sometimes, the most professional response is:
“Let me understand what this requires first.”


Because growth doesn’t always begin with confidence.
Sometimes, it begins with a question.
“Can I do this?”
And then having the courage to explore what the answer could be.

So let me ask you:
What is the last project or opportunity that made you question whether you should take it up?

Did you say YES?
NO?
Or “Let me understand this first”?
