The Power of FINESSE: When the Smallest Signals Change the Room!

Sometimes, leadership isn’t changed by what you say.
It is changed by what people notice before you finish saying it.

This weekend, during one of our FINESSE sessions, we explored something that may appear almost insignificant at first glance:
The Crown. A simple exercise. A simple object.
Yet, when the crown was held differently—particularly when it was held too high in the wrong context—the entire energy of the room changed.
Nothing was said.
But something was communicated.
Communication begins long before words.

We often invest heavily in the visible markers of professional success.
The right vocabulary.
Fluent English.
A powerful presentation.
An impressive designation.
An expensive suit.
A polished LinkedIn profile.
But leadership presence is built from the small signals we send—often without realising it.
And sometimes…
how we speak to the person serving us at a restaurant.
I was reminded of this during a meeting with an entrepreneur.
We were sitting in a restaurant, discussing business.
The person was accomplished, well presented and clearly successful.
But something began to bother me.
It wasn’t the conversation between us.
It was the way the entrepreneur spoke to the steward.

It made me reflect:What does success mean if the way we exercise our power diminishes someone else?

A premium suit cannot compensate for poor conduct.
Fluent English cannot create emotional intelligence.
A senior designation cannot manufacture respect.
And authority is certainly not the same as influence.
This is where FINESSE becomes powerful.

FINESSE, to me, isn’t about being polished for appearance’s sake. It is about awareness. And awareness of the impact we create.

Executive presence isn’t simply about how you enter a room.
It is about what happens to the room because of how you show up.
And perhaps this is why communication development cannot stop at:
“Improve your English.”
or
“Use better vocabulary.”
or
“Learn presentation skills.”

FINESSE asks us to take that idea one step further:
Depth requires us to notice what we normally overlook.
The pause.
The expression.
The tone.
The gesture.
The person who isn’t speaking.
Because sometimes, the smallest signal changes everything.

So here’s a question I would leave with every entrepreneur, leader and professional:
If someone observed you today without hearing a single word you said, what would your behaviour tell them about the leader you are?
Because people may forget your presentation.
They may forget your vocabulary.
They may forget your attire.
They may even forget your designation.

But they remember how it felt to be in your presence.

That is the power of FINESSE.
